B4BC - Day 3,4

 These have been work days, so I haven't had any dedicated time to look for new birds.  

Well, that's not 100% true.  I was on base today and looked for that TRI-COLORED HERON but didn't see it in it's usual location.  

I drove around and saw plenty of other birds, but nothing noteworthy.  I did find a OSPREY which would be a new bird for the year, but not worth opening eBird for.  

I found a large patch of WHITE CROWNED SPARROWS hoping for a White Throat or Harris' but no luck.  


In other news, I hope to have a link for the donation site up by the end of the month, otherwise it's just listing it in a blog post and then soliciting donations to those people via Venmo or PayPal at the end of the year.  If I use GoFundMe, they take a portion, and I don't want that.  


Anyway, here's a photo of  BROWN BOOBY that I captured a couple of years ago on a Pelagic trip off the coast of Ventura.  I was hoping to use this photo as the icon for this blog because... well, get it?

B4BC - End of the first week

Here we are on Jan. 8th.  I had training for most of the week which limited how much birds I could look for.  My backyard only yielded a few species, many of the same.   But just before lunch I was able to get 4 beautiful HOODED MERGANSER.  It's my favorite duck-like bird (tied with Wood Duck).  It was in the Callegues creek near my house and golf course.   On the way to my parents house I stopped by Lake Sherwood and got some year birds: There's been a BALD EAGLE around Lake Sherwood since Jan. 1st (found by Dave P).  Hearing it initially from the fire station making it's high-pitched warning call.  Then saw it briefly being harassed by ravens as it retreated to the fields.   This location is also consistent for PURPLE FINCH which isn't very easy to find at low elevations in this area, so it was good to tick that off the list.  No real photos ready from today.  I was emotionally distraught with some other work and he...

B4BC - Day 10 (117 birds!)

 Had a big day today which entailed me wearing a shirt and tie and discussing my professional qualifications to a board of 4 people who were instructed not to interact with me.  So after studying all weekend, we'll see how that went in a week or so.  Fingers crossed It's been windy, so that makes birding quite hard.  I went for a quick bite for lunch and tried for a California Gnatcatcher and Cactus Wren at a known location, but the wind was too much to even open an eBird record for it.   On the way back I cruised past the golf course and saw a huge flock of geese (finally).  Scanning through the 60 or so geese, I was able to pick out two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and a single CACKLING GOOSE.  That CAGO I missed last year in the county, and it's been slow around the golf course.  I'm still missing any white geese this year, even though a flock has been seen on the Oxnard Plain of late.   Right now, here are the top birds I've yet ...
